Mesa PD: Officers shoot, kill man carrying steel pipe

Mesa police shot and killed a man who reportedly came at them while carrying a steel pipe late Thursday night.

Police received a report of a suspicious man walking with a steel pipe in a gated community near Power and McDowell Roads at about 10 p.m. Residents said he was banging the metal rod on concrete.

Officers used their stun guns on him when he refused to drop the pipe. The man managed to get back up and an officer shot him.

"When the Taser stopped its cycle and there was no longer current flowing, that's when he jumped up again with that metal rod and came toward the officers and that's when he was shot," Detective Steve Berry said.

No officers were injured.

The man was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. He has been identified as Ivan Krstic, 47. Police said he lived in the community with his family.

Berry said Krstic was the suspect in a 2012 case in the same neighborhood when he said that he had a large-caliber rifle and would use it if officers approached. Due to the proximity to Las Sendas Elementary School, the entire area was on lockdown for several hours while negotiators and SWAT talked to Krstic. He eventually came out and was arrested for the disruption of the school and making threats.
